Microchipping is the only unalterable, tamper-proof, permanent form of identification for your pets. Pets are curious and prone to adventure. They are also natural escape artists and will often wander outside of the boundaries of your home. It is important to have your pet identifiable by means other than a collar with a tag, as these often slip off or get caught on a fence. A tattoo can become illegible as your pet ages. Even if your pet stays indoors, in the event of a natural disaster, house fire, or other incident, having your pet microchipped is an extra safety measure to insure your pet is safely returned to you!
The microchip implanted in your pet is as small as a grain of rice and is placed under the skin in between the shoulder blades. After implantation, it is important to register your information with the recovery service associated with your microchip. The Humane Society of the United States recently published a study that showed a 250% increase in reuniting microchipped and registered dogs with their owners and a 20% increase in reuniting cats with their families.
At Williston Veterinary Clinic, we use the Microfindr microchip and PetLink recovery services. They have outstanding customer service and are committed to animal welfare. When you use Petlink recovery service, the cost of the microchip includes your registration and covers you for the lifetime of your pet, unlike other microchip products which charge anywhere from $19-50 per pet.
